Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S24: Is the Samsung Galaxy S24 a Disappointment?

In the past, we always got a few pleasant surprises from newly released phones. However, in recent years, we haven't seen any practical upgrades from the regular annual iterations of mobile phones. We were disappointed with the results after waiting for a year.

Samsung unveiled its new flagship phones, including the S24, S24 Plus, and the S24 Ultra, at the Galaxy Unpacked event. Evaluating the new Galaxy S24 series in comparison to its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 series, we are asking: Is the Samsung Galaxy S24 a disappointment this year?

Here we list some questions and offer answers by comparing the Galaxy S23 and S24 series.

Q1: What are the changes in the design of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series?
A1: In terms of display, the Galaxy S23 series includes the following sizes: the Galaxy S23 with a 6.1" FHD+ display, the Galaxy S23 Plus with a 6.6" FHD+ display, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra with a 6.8" QHD+ display. All three models offer a peak brightness of 1750 nits.

On the other hand, the new Galaxy S24 has a larger 6.2" FHD+ display, while the S24 Plus boasts a bigger 6.7" QHD+ display. However, the S24 Ultra maintains the same 6.8" QHD+ display as its predecessor. All three models incorporate an impressively higher peak brightness of 2600 nits.

In contrast, the new Galaxy S24 has a larger 6.2" FHD+ display, while the S24 Plus boasts a bigger 6.7" QHD+ display. However, the S24 Ultra maintains the same 6.8" QHD+ display as its predecessor. All three models now offer a higher peak brightness of 2600 nits.

Q2: What processors are used in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series?
A2: In the past, Samsung used different chips in different regions for their smartphones. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S22 and its previous models in certain African and European countries utilized Samsung's own Exynos chips. However, for the Galaxy S23 series, all models worldwide are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

In a similar fashion to the S22 series, Samsung implements a comparable strategy for the S24 models. The S24 and S24 Plus use Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset in the United States/Canada, while the phones in other areas have the Exynos 2400 processor. Nevertheless, the S24 Ultra utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip across all regions.

Q3: Are there any improvements to the camera lens of the Galaxy S24 series?
A3: There appear to be few improvements in the camera specifications. In the previous Galaxy S23 series, the S23 and S23 Plus had a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The S23 Ultra boasts a 200MP primary lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and another 10MP telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom.

Moving on to the latest Galaxy S24 series, the S24 and S24 Plus feature the same camera setup as their predecessors with a 50MP primary lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The S24 Ultra still sports a 200MP primary lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and an upgraded 50MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

Regarding the selfie camera, all three models in the S24 series retain the same 12MP lens found in their S23 counterparts.

Q4: What memory options are available for the Galaxy S24 series?
A4: The Galaxy S23 lineup offers various storage options, with the standard model having 8GB of RAM and choices between 128GB, and 256GB, and in certain regions, 512GB of internal storage. The Galaxy S23 Plus also features 8GB of RAM, with options of 256GB or 512GB internal storage. The Galaxy S23 Ultra provides 8GB of RAM along with 256GB of storage, or 12GB of RAM with choices between 256GB, 512GB, and even 1TB of internal storage.

Looking at the new generation, the Galaxy S24 series maintains a similar memory and storage configuration as its predecessor. The Galaxy S24 offers 8GB of RAM and options of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. The Galaxy S24 Plus receives a boost in RAM with 12GB and offers a choice of 256GB or 512GB of storage. As for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it retains 12GB of RAM and the same internal storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB; however, it no longer offers an 8GB RAM variant.

Q5: How do the battery capacities of the Galaxy S24 models compare to the S23 series?
A5: The battery capacity for the Samsung Galaxy S23 series saw an increase across all three models last year. Specifically, the S23 model boasts a capacity of 3900mAh, surpassing the previous S22 model which had 3590mAh. The S23 Plus model also saw an increase to 4700mAh, compared to the 4370mAh capacity of the S22 Plus. The S23 Ultra model possesses a battery capacity of 5000mAh, slightly higher than the 4855mAh capacity of the S22 Ultra.

However, when it comes to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 series, we didn't see a significant increase in battery capacity compared to its predecessor. The S24 model features a capacity of 4000mAh, while the S24 Plus model has a capacity of 4900mAh. Additionally, the S24 Ultra model retains the same battery capacity as its predecessor, maintaining its 5000mAh capacity.

Q6: What is the charging speed of the Galaxy S24 series?
A6: The Galaxy S23 offers a rapid charging speed of up to 25W through wired chargers, whereas the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra provide even faster charging capabilities of up to 45W. For wireless charging, all three models support a speed of 15W, along with 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

In terms of the Galaxy S24 series, there is no upgrade in the charging speed. In other words, the Galaxy S24 continues to offer 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. Similarly, the S24 Plus and S24 Ultra maintain 45W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

Q7: What's new with the Galaxy S24 series?
A7: The biggest attraction of the Galaxy S24 series should be the innovative AI feature that can offer assistance in various tasks, such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, AI Camera, Transcript Assist, and more. With the AI integration coming into reality, we can look forward to an entirely novel AI experience with the Galaxy S24 series.

Q8: Is there a price increase for the Galaxy S24 series?
A8: The starting price for the S24 model is $799, and the S24 Plus starts at $999, both retaining the prices of their previous models. However, there is an increase in pricing for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which starts at $1,299, marking a $100 rise compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Ultra 23 ($1,199).

Q9: Should I buy the new Galaxy S24 or stay with the previous Galaxy S23?
A9: Whether you should upgrade to the S24 series depends on your specific needs.

If you want a brighter display and embrace the convenient AI features, you can upgrade to the Galaxy S24 series. You can even opt for the Galaxy S24 Ultra for sharper photos and a refined titanium frame.

However, considering the high cost of the Galaxy S24 series, it is likely that the Galaxy S23 series will witness a price reduction soon. If cost-saving is a priority, it may be advantageous to consider the Galaxy S23 series.

Conclusion

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, the S24 series may not have made significant hardware advancements, particularly in the base models.

However, it is also worth noting that the latest S24 series offers impressive upgrades that the S23 series lacks, such as improved brightness and innovative AI features. These improvements can make the S24 series a game-changer and bring us a better user experience.
